A Dedicated Professional Here to Guide You
I had a long career in various sales and managerial roles before deciding to return to education. I completed a QQI level 5 in Community Health Services after which I studied counseling and Psychotherapy.
I was working long hours as a sales representative and was finding work extremely stressful. I soon found myself suffering from stress, anxiety, and depression, so I decided it was time for a change of lifestyle and a change of career. I consider myself to be a caring and compassionate person and I always had an interest in psychology and mental health, so psychotherapy was an obvious choice for me. Since making that decision, I have never looked back, and I am deeply passionate about my work.
I graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Counselling & Psychotherapy from PCI College and then completed a MSc in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Motivational Interviewing with Waterford Institute of Technology. I work from a humanistic perspective with a person-centered ethos and integrate this approach with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing.
I believe, through a person-centered approach, individuals can resolve their problems and become the best that they can be. Applying the core principles of empathy, congruence, and unconditional positive regard creates the conditions needed for change, while integrating CBT and MI, provides structure and helps to identify therapeutic goals.
In 2019 I established my own practice, JK Counselling Services which offers personal therapy for a range of psychological issues such as addiction, anxiety, bereavement, depression, relationship issues, stress, and trauma. I also dedicate much time to working with adolescents and young adults with a diagnosis of ASD and co-morbid conditions such as ADHD, anxiety, depression, and OCD.
I am an accredited member of the Irish Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapy and I continue to engage in professional and personal development.
I am also an avid singer/songwriter who enjoys playing guitar and piano. I incorporate my passion for writing into my practice, encouraging expression through journaling and writing.
